DINNE AND BENT ELGAARD PEDERSEN:We have both been working with German hunting terriers since the early nineties, but we didn’t actually meet each other until the new millenium. We first ran into each other at a dog show where we each had a German hunting terrier taking part. Our dogs quickly fell for each other, as did Bent and I! Eventually, we consolidated everyone here at Klitgaard.
We expanded quickly, and started the kennel based on our mutual interest in German hunting terriers. We specialize in, and work with this one breed.
We try to pass on as much of our knowledge as possible on our homepage, without subjective and complicated explanations that new dog owners might find bewildering.

We get many visitors at Kennel Klitgaard. We limit visits to Wednesdays and Saturdays, to ensure that we have enough time for the care of the dogs.
If you wish to see our dogs or puppies, pick up or deliver a dog, pick up food, a doghouse or anything else relating to the dogs, you are most welcome to contact us to make an appointment for either Wednesday or Saturday.
See our pictures along with explanations about Kennel Klitgaard’s dogs under the Menu Heading: “Kennel Klitgaard’s Dogs.” (Kennel Klitgaards hunde)
At Kennel Klitgaard you can request a fully-trained German hunting terrier, Our work in this area has proven to be a tremendous success. See under Menu heading “Fully Trained.” (Færdigtrænede hunde.)
Now and then, an interesting German hunting terrier pays a visit to our kennel, in order to be further procure to a new family - so keep an eye out for the Menu Heading: "Videreformidling".
Our dogs have a calm and peaceful temperament. When they do bark, it is for a reason. For example, we encourage them to announce the arrival of visitors.
A close working relationship between people and animals is, in our opinion, one of the most rewarding things one can experience. Training, hunting with a dog, and advanced teamwork, bonds a dog and owner in a completely different way than a relationship based simply on a dog’s feeding and walking requirements. This has to be experienced to be understood.
WE ARE THE ONLY PLACE IN DENMARK THAT PROVIDES EVERYTHING TO DO WITH GERMAN HUNTING TERRIERS. AROUND HERE, DOGS ARE THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING:
We have black males and black bitches, either smooth-haired, coarse-haired, or “in-between.” They come with different ranging from light brown to orange/yellow-brown colours.
Their sizes range from large, through medium, to smaller. Of course, all of our dogs fit within the specified size range of the breed.
We have a brown coarse-haired male, as well as a brown smooth-haired bitch.
We have the strongest muscular male dogs you will find anywhere, along with some extremely sociable dogs.
We love and enjoy every new litter that comes into our lives. A life without dogs is actually unimaginable for us.
I (Dinne) have now managed to reduce the amount of time I work away from the kennel (as a school teacher) to a minimum. This enables me to reply to emails and requests from all around the world, in addition to the day-to-day care and training of the dogs. So, we are well on the way to turning our hobby and passion into our full-time work. Even our vacations are spent with the dogs. Bent takes his summer holidays during hunting season, so that the dogs can have some great hunting outings. (I am lucky to have long school-holidays in summer)
Our fox-training-grave and our foxhole are certified by the Danish Terrier Club, and we are both authorized trainers with the club.
During the hunting off-season, we hold training sessions every Saturday from 10:00 until 13:00.
We do not have sessions during hunting season (September-February).
See pictures under the menu heading: "Training" ("Gravtræning/gravoplæring") and ("Træningsgrav")
We are both very active hunters and especially enjoy fox hunting from fox graves and ofcause other hunting with that charming and clever fox dog and working terrier, the German hunting terrier is! Bent in particular, is off hunting whenever possible.
We also often go on hunting expeditions together, but if we have pups, I (Dinne) stay home to take care of them. We strongly believe that as much time as possible should be spent with the puppies during this critical and formative stage of their development.

**At the last "avlsprove" (test) in North Jutland, the winner was a dog that was raised at Kennel Klitgaard.

**German Hunting Terrier of the Year in the German Hunting Terrier club, 2006, was raised at Kennel Klitgaard. See “Klitgaard Harry” in the photo below.
“Klitgaard Harry" in the photo. He is the offspring of Kennel Klitgaard’s Freja and Kennel Klitgaard’s Buller. When we have pups, we do as many things as possible with them and as early as possible. We hold them as frequently as we can. From a very young age, our pups play with everything from tanner rabbit pelts to mink pelts, and are allowed to chew on pig’s feet, hearts and liver. We introduce them to car rides early on, and take them with us to the shooting range.

We believe that the best German Hunting Terrier is achieved by:
Firstly: The father and the mother to the pups must both be absolute regular and have top performance at hunt. They must both be of the very best selection.
The males must be heavily built and on the large side of the standard and not spindly built. They must have a lot of musculars.
Secondly: That the social aspects are encouraged, as the German Hunting Terrier should also be a very loving family dog.

We only live 4 kilometers from the North Sea, so our dogs get a lot of long walks in the fresh sea air!
Tiny pups also come with us in the car, and all are allowed to run free on the great sandy stretches of beach.
We take the breeding of pups very seriously, and believe that only the best of the best dogs should be used for breediing.
Our dogs all get used for hunting a lot, and therefore we are 100% familiar with their individual hunting skills. We believe that our female dogs should be more than “breeding machines.” They also love to hunt and we encourage them to do so. Therefore, we make sure that each dog only gives birth to 3 or 4 litters in her lifetime.
All our dogs have either won First Prize at showing or have taken other good "tests". One of our dogs was the Nordic Winner in 2000, and another was chosen as the Nordic Winner (Junior Category) in 2004. The 2006 DKK German Hunting Terrier of the Year was a dog raised at Kennel Klitgaard. Several of our dogs have had tests with excellent results.
We are careful about placing our dogs, and screen all potential owners very carefully. German Hunting Terriers are not suitable dogs for everyone.
We believe that by careful screening, we can eliminate situations where the dog gets off on the wrong foot in an unsuitable environment.)
Although it is hard to say “no” to any family who wants to buy a dog, our experience is that people respect and appreciate our decisions in this regard, and the fact that we choose dog owners with solicitude.
We invest an equal amount of time and effort choosing the right dog for a particular family. We actually see this as one of our most important responsibilities. Because we spend so much time with the pups during their first weeks in the world, we get to understand their individual traits, and observe even the minutest differences between litter-mates.
For example, an older, less active hunter should not have the most active pup in the litter, while the active pup would probably be a great match for an avid hunter. On the other hand, a family with children should have an extremely social and loving pup.
Matching the right dog with the right family is paramount. As a result, we have received nothing but positive responses.
